    Brazilian Jujitsu

The martial art of ground fighting.

With roots in Japan and pioneered in the early 20th century in Brazil, Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) is the highly popular martial art of ground fighting. Characterized by the use of chokes, strangles, and joint locks to subdue an attacker (rather than the use of strikes), BJJ's unique and analytical approach to the problem of defeating a resisting opponent has likened the art to "a game of physical chess." The Brazilian style of the grappling art of jujitsu relies heavily on the idea of advancing position - putting your opponent in an increasingly perilous and confined situation, making it easier to subdue them.

Students of BJJ often remark on its "strangely addictive" nature, and often liken high levels of technical skill in the art as akin to having "wizard powers."

    Submission Grappling

Just like Brazilian Jujitsu, but without the gi (formal uniform).

A faster, more athletic version of ground fighting (think wrestling, except with chokes and joint locks), submission grappling utilizes the techniques of Brazilian Jujitsu and melds them with the techniques of other grappling arts (such as wrestling, sambo, and catch) to create a formidable martial art that can be applied no matter what the opponent is wearing.

Typically practiced in a rashguard and shorts, the techniques and methods of submission grappling are directly applicable to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

    Eugene Thong, CSCS

    Coach/Instructor

A Brown Belt under Master Renzo Gracie, Eugene Thong began life as a skinny, weak, bespectacled child. Now, thanks to a steady diet of martial arts, scientific inquiry, and heavy compound movements, he's no longer weak. He began his BJJ training at Renzo Gracie Academy in 2004 and currently studies with Professor John Danaher. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the NSCA.

    Master Renzo Gracie

    Pioneer.

None of us would be here without him.

There's not much we can say about Master Renzo that hasn't been written elsewhere with far more eloquence and elegance. A pioneer of mixed martial arts, a wellspring of BJJ knowledge, and an inspiration to all his students, Master Renzo is one of the most recognizable members of the famous Gracie clan, who've demonstrated the devastating effectiveness of their family's martial art - Brazilian Jujitsu - in unarmed combat.

A list of of his accomplishments would overwhelm this page, and stories of his exploits in the ring, on the mat, and in the cage would fill volumes. But a short summary can be found here.

JC Projects is proud to fly the Team Renzo Gracie flag.
